What to Do When a RAID Array Fails
What you do in the first few minutes can decide whether your data is still reachable. If your array has gone offline or is showing a degraded warning, follow these steps:
- Power it down properly. Running a failing drive keeps stressing it.
- Don't start a rebuild. A rebuild on a weak array can overwrite the data you're trying to save.
- Don't re-initialise or reformat. A prompt to "create a new volume" will wipe the existing structure.
- Label the drives. Note which bay each drive came from, because the order matters.
- Don't swap in new drives. Keep the original drives exactly as they are.
- Write down the details. Note the RAID level, the controller or NAS model, and any error messages.
