In This Guide
To choose an IT support company in Melbourne, first match the provider type to your size: enterprise managed service providers (MSPs), small-business managed providers, or pay-as-you-go onsite technicians. Then compare onsite and remote options, hourly rates and minimums, managed plan inclusions, response times, contract terms and who holds your admin credentials.
What types of IT support companies are there in Melbourne?
Melbourne providers fall into three broad groups. Which one suits you depends on how many people and devices you have and whether you want help when something breaks or ongoing cover.
- Large managed service providers (MSPs) for enterprise. These suit larger organisations with many staff, multiple sites or compliance needs. The usual engagement is a contract with a recurring fee, often per user or per device, covering monitoring and a help desk.
- Small-business managed providers. These suit offices that want someone responsible for their IT without a full-time hire. The usual engagement is an ongoing plan for a set fee, sometimes alongside hourly work for projects. You can see how this works in our managed IT services in Melbourne.
- Home and onsite technicians. These suit households, home offices and small businesses with a specific problem, such as a printer, Wi-Fi or a slow computer. The usual engagement is pay-as-you-go: you book, the problem is fixed, and you are billed for the time.
Geeks I.T. Melbourne works with homes and small businesses across metro Melbourne and its suburbs, with onsite and remote support and managed IT plans for small businesses. Our main IT support in Melbourne page lists everything we cover.
How to shortlist Melbourne IT support companies
Rather than starting from a list of big names, shortlist on fit. Four checks narrow the field quickly:
- Check recent Google reviews. Look at how recent they are, whether they describe jobs like yours, and how the company responds to complaints. You can see ours on our reviews page, with the live Google rating and count.
- Ask for local client references. A provider that works with Melbourne clients like you should be able to put you in touch with one or two.
- Confirm they support your setup. Check Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace, Mac, and your printers and network equipment.
- Confirm the service area. Make sure they cover your suburb for onsite visits, and ask how remote support works if you are outside it. Ours are listed on our service areas page.
What questions should you ask an IT support company?
Compare every provider on the same eight questions. The table below sets out why each matters, what a good answer looks like, and how Geeks I.T. Melbourne answers it. Where a term depends on your setup or plan, we put it in writing before you book rather than guess.
| Question to ask | Why it matters | What a good answer looks like | Geeks I.T. Melbourne |
|---|---|---|---|
| Do you offer both onsite and remote support? | Different problems need different formats, and a single format can mean slower fixes or unnecessary visits. | Both are offered, and the provider explains which problems suit which. | Yes. We offer onsite and remote support across metro Melbourne. Remote suits software, email and account problems; onsite suits printers and Wi-Fi coverage at your premises. |
| How does your pricing work? | Minimums, call-out fees and rounding change what a short job actually costs. | Rates, minimum charge and call-out fee are stated up front, in writing. | $205/hour onsite and $125/hour remote, with a one-hour minimum and no call-out fee. See our IT support cost guide for Melbourne. |
| What does a managed plan include? | Plans that look similar can cover very different things. | A clear list of inclusions and exclusions, with pricing published or quoted. | We offer managed plans for small businesses. The inclusions and plan prices are published on our business IT support page. |
| What are your response times and business-hours availability? | A slow response to a down network or email outage costs a business money every hour. | Written response targets, stated support hours, and a clear way to reach someone urgently. | Same-day response across Melbourne, seven days a week. Managed plans also include a business-hours remote help desk. |
| How do you handle cybersecurity and backups? | Weak security and untested backups are what turn a minor incident into a serious one. | The provider can explain how it approaches the ACSC Essential Eight, the Australian Government baseline of mitigation strategies, plus what is backed up, where, and how restores are tested. | Our managed plans include cybersecurity (antivirus, firewall, MFA) and cloud backups with tested restores. |
| What is the contract length, and what are the lock-in and exit terms? | Long lock-ins and unclear exit terms make it costly to leave a provider that is not working out. | Contract length, notice period and offboarding steps are stated in writing before you sign. | Managed plans are month-to-month, with no lock-in contract and no setup fee. One-off jobs need no contract at all. |
| Who owns the admin credentials and the data? | If the provider holds the only admin logins, leaving can mean losing access to your own systems. | You own your data and hold the admin credentials, or can get them on request, and handover on exit is documented. | Your data stays yours. We agree in writing who holds the admin logins and how they are handed back. |
| What do you not do? | Out-of-scope work leads to delays, surprise costs or poor results. | A short, direct list. | No Mac hardware repairs, no board-level repairs, and on laptops only Windows battery replacement, fan cleaning and thermal paste. The full list follows. |
What does Geeks I.T. Melbourne not do?
Geeks I.T. Melbourne has a deliberately narrow scope on hardware, and we would rather say so now than after you have booked.
- We do not do laptop hardware repairs other than battery replacement on Windows laptops (not MacBooks). Fan cleaning and thermal paste replacement are fine, and other laptop faults we diagnose and refer to a specialist.
- We do not do Mac hardware repairs. Mac support, setup and troubleshooting are fine, and you can read about Apple Mac support.
- We do not do board-level or component repairs.
- For desktops, our hardware work is limited to diagnosis and SSD and RAM upgrades, plus software fixes; other desktop repairs we diagnose and refer.
- We do not fit screens, keyboards, charging ports or hinges; we diagnose the fault and refer you.
What our business clients say
Here is what a good review looks like: it describes a specific problem, what the technician did and how the visit went. Here is one verified Google review of Geeks I.T. Melbourne, quoted exactly as written.
Verified Google review from Marissa:
“Harry was very patient and knowledgeable regarding issues with merging two Google Workspace accounts. He helped me with all the issues we were having problems with.”
Notice the detail: a named problem (merging two Google Workspace accounts), who handled it and how. Account and email jobs like this often suit remote support.
